Tis’ the season of giving and the United Block Captains Association (UBCAH) is now accepting donations for their annual Holiday Celebration!

UBCAH is asking for monetary or toy donations for youth ages 0-16. Donations can be dropped at the following locations:

United Block Captains Association or W/SW NAC Office (4020 Market Street)
Please touch Museum (4231 Avenue of the Republic)
The West Philadelphia Senior Center (41st & Poplar)

This event will take place at 6pm, December 23rd at School of the Future, located at 40th and Parkside Ave. Community members can enjoy refreshments, entertainment, gift giveaways, and Santa Claus himself! This event is supported by SCOP, Philadelphia Activities Fund, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, and Councilman Curtis Jones Jr.

How to make a quick $30 Bucks

Sustainable Communities Initiative-West (SCI-West) is a collaboration of local non-profit organizations and stakeholders that seek to improve the quality of life in West Philadelphia. Currently, SCI-west is doing research on how communication flows between neighbors, nonprofits, news outlets, and other organizations in the community. We need your help. We want to see how you use the web and how you find information online AND we want to pay you $30 bucks for helping us!

So how do you make $30 bucks?

Participate in a 3-hour online information hunt on Saturday Dec. 10th at the PECO Financial Education Center located at 4027 Market Street from 9:30am to 12:30 pm. Our facilitator will show you what you need do when you arrive and when you leave we will hand you a $30 Visa gift card! It really is that simple.

The Commercial Corridor Manager is responsible for cultivating relationships with a diverse business/client base and playing an integral role implementing the organization’s community development strategy through engaging the corridors and neighborhoods we are investing in.

The Commercial Corridor Manager has internal contacts with the entire administrative staff and external contact with members of the neighborhood development team and other community resources. This position requires hands-on field work, which may result in working non-traditional hours. This position has access to client information and is expected to handle such information with integrity and professionalism. This position has regular contact with members of the community and is expected to represent the CDC in a professional manner. The Commercial Corridor Manager will report to the Executive Director and participate in department activities as necessary.

Citizens Bank provides $50,000 grant for green roofing project

Today a $50,000 grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation was presented to Philadelphia LISC (Local Initiative Support Corporation) for is Sustainable Communities Initiative. The monies from this grant are being used to revitalize neighborhoods. This grant will also be used to provide The Partnership CDC’s Green Roofing training program designed to create green jobs while lowering home energy bills.

The 300 Block of Holly Street in West Philadelphia was one of the two blocks selected to receive free roofs. Nine houses on the block have been completed so far; two have received a green roof, and seven have received a cool roof. The remainder of the block will be completed by the class of nine graduates of the Green Roofing Professional Certification Exam. “Equipment seized in a Delaware County drug bust will now help grow vegetables and herbs” -Philadelphia Inquirer

“Delaware County is taking from the bad guys to give to the good guys. State-of-the-art equipment once used to grow marijuana will soon be used to grow vegetables and herbs in Philadelphia”, G. Michael Green, Delaware County’s district attorney said at Tuesday’s event.

The seized equipment will be donated to Cheyney University and the Partnership CDC, of West Philadelphia. Of course, The Partnership CDC will use this equipment to expand our Urban Food Lab.

Donations sought for the displaced residents of the 5-alarm fire in West Philadelphia

On Monday, January 10, 2011, a five alarm fire destroyed the homes of residents living in a West Philadelphia apartment building. While reports say no one was injured or killed in the fire, many residents lost everything. Mayor Michael Nutter says 118 people are homeless as a result of the fire.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army have been providing emergency shelter and services to the families. The Partnership CDC is supporting their efforts by collecting donations for personal hygiene products, towels, washcloths, hats, scarfs, gloves, coats and children’s books or toys. Financial donations should be sent directly to Salvation Army 5501 Market Street, Philadelphia PA 19139.

Other donation may be dropped of at our office 4020 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA. Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm. For more information, please call Tess Williams at (215) 662-1612 x 24.

GO GREEN! GET HEALTHY!

The Partnership CDC has been growing some different programs in our backyard of West Philly to make life a little healthier for you. The Green and Healthy Initiatives of The Partnership CDC are a five-pronged approach to “greening Philadelphia one block at a time”.

First, the Green and Cool Roofings are low maintenance, cost effective investments to save money on energy bills. The Healthy Homes program is a series of workshops that help community members and their elementary age children learn important methods of keeping their homes safe and healthy. The Green Professionals training is the training of local individuals to become certified green and cool roofing installers. The Partnership also has a Greenhouse, which serves as an educational venue for learning about plant biology and aquaponics and allows The Partnership to practice what it preaches! Lastly, the Financial Literacy Classes offer a wide range of free services to residents participating in our green programs. These services include credit counseling, energy audits, budgeting, and financial literacy training. Green Block Parties are the outreach tool used to share our programs and services with residents.

These initiatives have recently been getting national attention!

Two of the graduates of our Green and Cool Roofing Program were seen in the article of the Associated Press, which was then posted on the The Washington Post, USA Today, AOL News, MSNBC, and Yahoo! News. The articles demonstrated the rising popularity of Cool Roofing, and its economic benefits! Not only is The Partnership CDC on the forefront of this new technology, but we are actually creating jobs to support it!

Also, the Healthy Homes Program has been featured in the news! Our workshops have just begun and The Partnership CDC as the program coordinators are happy to know that this year will be even better than last. We are planning to give out over $1,000 worth of products that will allow the residents of West and Southwest Philadelphia to implement their growing knowledge of living green and healthy.
